Te Reo o te Wai - the language of the water

March 27, 2024

MTSW have teamed up with Ruamāhanga Farm Foundation and Ruamāhanga Restoration Trust to connect Wairarapa tamariki to water. Jane and Rod from RFF had a vision of taking tamariki on a journey to explore different aspects of wai through a range of mediums including science, biodiversity, story-telling, planting, and art.

The journey started today with an exploration of the Ruamāhanga awa. Tamariki got to explore the water quality and the biodiversity of the awa, including seeing a really big kōura!

The next step on the journey is for the class to learn to restore the land by planting a QEII podocarp forest. Podocarps are conifers trees with cones and fruit, native to New Zealand, and include rimu, matai, kahikatea, and miro.

Over the next few months tamariki from Kahutara and Martinborough schools will get to experience being scientists, writers, kaitiaki, and artists. All of the mahi is culminating in an exhibition of their work at Waihinga Centre in Martinborough over conservation week. Keep an eye out for a celebration of their mahi later in the year.
