We have had an absolute blast with the tamariki from Silverstream School as part of our Whitebait Connection programme!
We began our freshwater journey exploring Hulls Creek and Pinehaven Stream, where we discovered lots of common toitoi and macroinvertebrates. We then headed up the catchment Collin’s Stream in Tunnel Gully, where we found plenty of kōura (freshwater crayfish) and even a redfin toitoi in the clear waters.
After seeing the difference in stream health between Hulls Creek/Pinehaven Stream and Tunnel Gully, the tamariki were motivated to take action to help restore and protect their own local waterways. Together, we planted over 200 native trees and grasses along the banks of Pinehaven Stream at Pinehaven Reserve. This was next to the plantings done by Pinehaven School. A huge shout out to our amazing volunteers who helped dig all the holes!
These new plants will help stabilise the stream banks, reduce erosion, provide shade, and create habitat for the native species living in the stream.
